Exclusive interview with  Cathy Cahlin Ryan about S.W.A.T

Yes, I am an actor primarily in the television arena.  
 

What do you like when you read the script? 
I look for storytelling. What is compelling and interesting to me as a reader and to an audience as a viewer. 

And what did you think when you discovered your character Dr. Wendy Hughes (S8 . E17 and S7 . E9 )?
I was thrilled with Dr. Wendy's arc and the wonderful bow that was put on for her. She showed her strength and intelligence while still being compassionate. 
 

Can you tell us how you got your role?
I am very very fortunate. My husband thought of me for Dr. Wendy and I was more than happy to accept!  
 
How did you prepare for your role?
I have a friend who is a therapist. I detected a certain cadence to how she spoke and behaved.
I also looked into police and first responder mental health issues to combine the therapy with a level of understanding and history of what these heroes go through day to day.  
 

How was the shooting with Shemar Moore.... and the director Ben Hernandez Bray?
GREAT! I always enjoy working with Shemar. He is a bright light.
Ben was actually on a former show I was on, "The Shield" but we didn't realize the connection until I got on set.
He is a wonderful director for actors and I appreciated his insight. 

 
Do you watch yourself, during the TV broadcast?
Hah, I try not to but ultimately, yes.
I learn a lot from watching and also I watch while on set how they are setting up shots so I can adjust if need be.

When and why did you choose to become an actress? 
I was in high school and realized during a drama class that it was something
I really really loved to do. I went on to get a Bachelor's degree in Theatre and it's been quite a ride since.  
 

What is your next challenge / project?
I am in the final episode of "The Night Agent" as an attorney named Jill. In addition I write and direct short films that are geared towards women. 
 

Do you have anything else you'd like to add?
Just gratitude for the career that I have been able to have. Working with fabulous people and directors along the way has been a gift.
