Exclusive interview with Vanessa Eichholz, American Actress,  Producer and Miscellaneous Crew

Hi Vanessa, first I'm very happy to do this interview about you.

What did you like about the storyline and your role in Hellboy ?

I like that the storyline in this “Hellboy“ reboot was more closely related to the storylines in the comic books than in previous films. It was authentic. 

My character is tough. She is a villainess and it was the first time
I got to play the evil side of human nature, which was both challenging and rewarding at the same time. 

How was the filming with David Harbour (Hellboy) and the diretor Neil Marshall?

David is a terrific and dedicated actor. He sat in the make-up chair for up to three hours to embody Hellboy. You can learn a lot being around such a talented actor. Neil is an amazing director, super easy to work with.
I had worked with him before on the Netflix show “Lost in Space“.
Despite the night shoots and long hours everyone was happy to be there. 

Were you familiar with the comics Hellboy before the filming?

I wasn’t too familiar with the comics before, but during the preparation process
I started watching both the previous Hellboy movies and I read a few of the Hellboy comics, especially the ones with Ilsa Hepstein, the character I’m portraying in the film. 

When and why did you choose to be an actress ?

Growing up I always wanted to be an actress. I loved movies and watched
“The Little Mermaid” on a daily basis and then recited it to my entire family on road trips when I was bored. Needless to say, they started hating “The Little Mermaid” pretty soon.
When you are a kid no one takes it seriously, but once you are a grown up parents and relatives rather wish for you to take on a real job. It takes a lot of dedication to keep going as an artist and I’m glad I stuck with it. 

You are  a member of Women in Film, and you are a member of the Women in Film Mentorship program.
Can you tell us more about the role of its 2 organizations?

Women in Film is a great organization and support system, as the entertainment industry can be very challenging for women at times. Many artists have a mentor, who guides them along the way.
For some reason, I never had that mentor. Of course, people have helped me along the way, but it was never one distinct person.
The Women in Film mentorship program provides that guidance and helps with accountability.
When you are an artist it is easy to procrastinate certain business aspects of your career. When you check in with your mentorship group every month, you better get stuff done.  

What is your next challenge?

I play an ambitious journalist in a drama called “The War Photographer”.
It is an independent European production, very different from a big set like “Hellboy”.
