Hi Rukku, I'm glad to do this interview
What could you tell us about your character Harleen?
Harleen is a detective that works alongside the team led by DS Bhamra (Played by Kareena Kapoor Khan). She had been promoted to Family Liaison Officer for this case.
It’s her job is to stay close to the family and report back what she finds whilst also being present in interviews.
She’s fun, headstrong and loves to let her hair down and have a good time when she isn’t on duty. Despite her outgoing nature she takes her job very seriously and isn’t scared to share her
opinion.
She has a close friendship with DC Sharon Marks (Played by Adwoa Akoto) and they spend time together in and out of work.
What did you like when you read the script of this movie?
This was my first time playing a detective and I was immediately attracted to the gritty nature of this film.
I love watching murder mystery/ crime films and series so I was very excited to
be a part of one.
I loved that when reading the script it wasn’t predictable and during the first cast reading the story had so many twists and turns, we as a cast didn’t expect the ending and became excited
for the audience to watch it and work it out before we even filmed!
Each character bought their own energy to this film and I loved how everyone complimented each other.
The fact that this film is mostly Indian (Hindi) but centred around a UK location immediately drew me to this project.
To be a part of something that represented both my cultures was an
opportunity I wouldn’t pass up.
How did you prepare for your
role?
I watched a lot of crime dramas especially ones in Hindi to get the feel for the genre and also to learn the language as I knew I needed to speak Hindi for the first time.
I love thrillers and crime films so I enjoyed the preparation.
How is the shooting with Keith Allen, Kareena Kapoor, Jonathan Nyati........... and the director Hansal Mehta?
I absolutely loved the cast on this film!
We immediately got on and it didn’t feel like we were all working together for the first time! It became like a family very quickly.
The energy was so fun and we spent a lot of time together.
Hansel is the first Bollywood director I’ve worked with and it was interesting to see his vision of each scene.
He would very much trust the actor make decisions in the scene and come in
where he felt necessary.
I can honestly say I spent everyday laughing with my cast mates.
We had some down time in the evenings and days off where we went out for food and drinks and the group was so lovely it never felt like work when we were filming. Shakira Dowling casted
immaculately for this.
I have been watching Kareena Kapoor in Bollywood films growing up so when
I first heard she was on this project I was so excited to start filming. She was a pleasure to work with and learn from.
Keith Allen is an absolute legend and I have so much time for him! Off screen he is one of the funniest people I have met! Jonathan Nyati & Darrren Kemp bought so much banter to
the set and it was a struggle to keep a straight face filming with them.
Adowa who plays DC Sharon Marks quickly became my on set bestie and we soon discovered our acting agents were also besties so we thought it was meant to be lol.
Ash Tandon is now a very close friend of mine and became almost an older brother figure on and off set!
The crew were also lovely and took care of us all so well. I was grateful to start my day with head massages and facials from the hair and makeup team everyday.
Where is the movie shot?
High Wycombe & Dover
How long was the shooting for this movie?
We spent autumn & winter filming, which included staying in Dover for a few weeks to shoot
some scenes. It was cold but the perfect setting for this movie.
When and why did you choose to
be an actress?
I started acting when I was 14 years old. I almost fell into it at a time where a lot of things in my life were constantly changing but my passion and drive for performing was
consistent and I kept following whatever excited me. I enjoyed meeting new people and learning from them.
This led me to make the decision from early, that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
I loved the challenge of immersing
myself into every role.
Playing and exploring different characters and telling their stories through the emotions I’ve experienced in my own personal life is something I am so grateful for. It keeps the inner
child in me alive as you never stop playing and learning. I always bring a part of myself to every character I play and this helped me learn a lot about me in the process. I’m a
very emotionally driven person so this career always felt like I belonged here.
Thank you very much for your interview Rukku I wish you all the best
