Exclusive interview with Kristian Bruun, Canadian Actor, Writer and Producer

By Jean-Paul Eliard
The 18 August 2025

Hi Kristian, I am very happy to do this interview.

Could you introduce yourself to the visitors of cinema-movietheater.com?
My name is Kristian Bruun - I am a Canadian actor, writer and producer living in Los Angeles. I'm a citizen of Canada and Finland (hello EU!) and I've lived and worked all over the world.

What do you like when you read the script?

I want some mystery. I don't like being spoon-fed answers, so I always appreciate it when a writer has the guts to leave things for interpretation, or at least leave things for the actor to discover on their own.

And what did you think when you discovered your character Boyd Taylor (S5 E22 and S6 E1) ?
My biggest question was "Why?". (Probably the most usefull question for an actor). It was fun to see how evil he was - a man on a mission, knowing there was no return - but why go to all this trouble? I knew I was going to have fun figuring this character out.

Can you tell us how you got your role?
Pretty simple, actually! The showrunner and creator of The Rookie, Alexi Hawley, asked me if I wanted to come on the show and be a baddie for a few episodes. I said yes without hesitation.
Alexi was my showrunner on the Netflix show "The Recruit" (yes, similar title - it confused my family for months being on both shows).
If you haven't watched that yet, do yourself a favor and binge the two seasons, it's so much fun. Alexi is the best boss. Any chance I get I work with him I take.

What was filming like with Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones.........?
It can be really intimidating coming onto a long-running show as a guest star, but I have to say the set of the Rookie was so relaxing!
The cast and crew were so nice. I got to see/work with some old friends. It films in Los Angeles, so I could travel to set from my house (a rare luxury these days unfortunately).
I was really welcomed with open arms. One of the nicest sets I've worked on. We had too much fun.

Do you watch yourself during the broadcast?
I rarely do, but for this one I was excited to see how things turned out. Boyd is like a Bond villain. Playing someone this bad was a dream come true.

When and why did you choose to become an actor?
Is it a film, an actor..........?

I always wanted to be an actor from a young age, but I thought everyone wanted to do that, so by university I had a different career path ahead of me.

On a dare I auditioned to be in a scripted comedy show in the student pub - and it completely changed everything.

I switched my major to Drama and studied theatre and never looked back. That said, it was the escape I experienced as a kid at the movies that made me want to work in this industry, It just took a while to discover that.

* You win 3 awards and  3 nominations.
What memory do you have of it?

It's always nice getting awards and nominations, but it's not why I got into this business. I just like to do good work that people want to watch.

And I always hope someone hires me again because I work hard and make set fun.

So in a sense, an award or nomination is a way to help grow your career and find the next job - and I always appreciate that.

What is your next challenge / project?
I have a number of projects in Post-Production. A comedy TV series called "Hate the Player", a dramatic biopic called "Jesus Land", and a handful of short films. As for the future?
Who knows! It's been a busy year, but there's still plenty of time for more. Hopefully I find something juicy to sink my teeth into before year's end.
In the meantime I have a number of writing projects I'm working on.

Do you have anything else you'd like to add?

Please support film in cinemas! The magic of seeing a film on the big screen is slowly dying and we need to get back into the joy of going to movies.
If you have a small independent movie theatre near you, consider getting a subscription to it. They need our help!

Thank you very much for your interview Kristian, I wish you the best.
